Jim Wilczak is a research meteorologist in NOAA’s Physical Sciences Laboratory, where he is the lead of the Terrestrial Boundary Layer team. He has been active in renewable energy research for over 15 years, and helped lead NOAA’s contributions to the joint DOE-NOAA Wind Forecast Improvement Projects (WFIP1 in 2012, WFIP2 in 2015-2016, and the current offshore-focused WFIP3). He also has contributed to capacity expansion model studies based on NOAA’s operational weather forecast models. A current area of research is wind and solar energy droughts, and their potential impacts on the energy system.
